Early Years

International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC)
RBIS is licensed to implement the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC)—a research-based, child-centred framework for children aged 2–5+ years, used in over 60 countries worldwide. The IEYC promotes holistic, play-based learning by combining international best practices with engaging thematic units that develop key skills in literacy, creativity, and physical development, preparing children for primary education.

A Holistic Approach to Learning
Central to the IEYC is a strong commitment to the holistic development of every child through enjoyable and playful personal, international, and academic learning experiences. These experiences prepare children for the opportunities and challenges of both today and the future.

Meaningful Units of Learning
IEYC Units of Learning are carefully designed with purposeful and rigorous activities that support young children’s development. Each unit nurtures curiosity, creativity, and individual interests within a broad, engaging theme, while strengthening the connection between school and home.

A Learning-Focused Framework
The IEYC is built on strong underpinning foundations that ensure learning remains at the centre of everything we do. Learning and development are organised into three interconnected and mutually reinforcing dimensions, supporting a balanced and comprehensive early years experience.

How Children Learn
The International Curriculum Association defines learning, based on brain research, as:
“The process of extending and consolidating our neuronal connections as we acquire Knowledge, develop Skills, and deepen our Understandings.”

This evolving definition reflects ongoing research and underpins our philosophy of how young children learn best.

The IEYC Dimensions of Learning
Learning and development with the IEYC is organised into 3 interconnected and mutually reinforcing dimensions, as summarised below.

Academic Dimension
The Academic Dimension is underpinned by four Learning Strands, each identifying specific Learning Experiences and Learning Outcomes. These experiences support children’s progress and guide their development towards clear learning goals.

Personal Dimension
The Personal Dimension identifies eight Personal Learning Goals that are acknowledged, valued, and celebrated as children demonstrate key qualities and attitudes.

International Dimension
The International Dimension supports young children to:
• engage with and enjoy the natural world
• begin to acknowledge and accept differences
• consider choices and long-term consequences
• strengthen their capacity to take action and make a difference

The IEYC Learning Process
Structured around Units of Learning, the IEYC process begins with an Entry Point to spark curiosity and excitement. This is followed by The Learning Process (Explore and Express), where children actively engage in meaningful experiences. It concludes with an Exit Point, allowing children to reflect on and celebrate their learning with families. This process supports teachers in providing engaging, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate experiences tailored specifically for young children.

IEYC: Progressive Pedagogy
The IEYC draws on a range of learning theories to shape its progressive pedagogy, ensuring high-quality learning experiences for children worldwide. Children are seen as active co-constructors of their learning rather than passive recipients.

The four key approaches include:
• Nurturing: Early learning and development are improved when a child’s experiences and interactions are developmentally appropriate and meaningful, promoting high levels of well-being and involvement.
• Responsive approach: Early learning and development are improved when a child’s environment adapts authentically and sufficiently to their state of mind, experiences, and interactions.
• Play-based learning: Early learning and development are improved when children’s experiences and interactions promote well-being, involvement, agency, curiosity, inquiry and creativity, and these experiences persist.
• Brain-based learning: Early learning and development are improved when children’s emerging cognitive processes are facilitated, supporting them to become more in control of and aware of their own emotions and thinking, and open to the ideas and thinking of others.
